Statistical labour market monitoring
This section contains detailed information on registered unemployment, registered vacancies, and cross-border-commuters within the international Lake Constance region.
Different legal frameworks and approaches to recording unemployment and job vacancies limit the comparability of the presented data. For instance, if compared to unemployment data collected by the EU for the respective regions, data provided by German and Austrian labour market authorities tend to slightly exceed harmonized EU figures while data provided by the Swiss labour market authority tend to be somewhat lower than the corresponding EU data. Numbers pertaining to job vacancies are provided by the respective national labour market authorities and mostly are based on vacancies which these authorities have been notified of by employers on a voluntary basis. Thus, only part of the „real“ job vacancies are reported to the labour market authorities. However, the figures presented here still reflect general trends in the job market and provide information on the current demand for labour in the region.
You can find more information on the different approaches to recording unemployment and vacancies in the methodology section.
Data on unemployment and job vacancies are updated monthly and made available by the 15th of the subsequent month. A statistical report on cross-border commuters ist published yearly (see our latest report: Grenzgängerinnen und Grenzgänger in der internationalen Bodenseeregion 2019). The main time series on unemployment and job vacancies are also presented graphically on a quarterly basis within the german part of this website (see „Arbeitsmarktmonitoring“).
Attention: The different unemployment rates within the international Lake Constance region are only partially comparable due to the different collection and legal bases. Due to this we do without a graphical representation of the quotas. Instead, various structural features and rates of change are reported for the registered unemployed and registered vacancies. It should be noted, however, that even small changes in the absolute numbers of small regional units can lead to large percentage fluctuations.
The Statistical Labour Market Monitoring (Statististisches Arbeitsmarktmonitoring) is supported by the labour-market work group of the IBK's economic commission. It replaces a former EURES-Bodensee sub-project and pursues the following goals:
- Reduce information deficits in order to enable efficient co-ordination of the labour market
- Increase perception of the Lake Constance region as a common labour market
- Uncover regional mismatches in the region's cross-border labour market
- Standardize differing indicators used to describe the labour market
The main challenge for a cross-border statistical project is the comparability of statistical data. Data collection practices and definitions of indicators often differ significantly among the four participating countries.
You will find detailed information and useful links about the methodological problems when comparing the labour market indicators in the Lake Constance region in the German part of this website, see "Methodisches" (available in German only).
